Sited on the slopes of Thyolo Mountain, this historic tea planter’s bungalow is a relaxed, family friendly retreat surrounded by lush subtropical rainforests on Satemwa Estate. With its beautiful manicured gardens and panoramic views – Chawani has been sensitively refurbished to retain the rustic character and charm which have made this property enormously popular with visitors to the highlands for decades.
As one of two properties available to guests of the estate, Chawani Bungalow offers visitors a great deal of flexibility by offering superb meals prepared by our locals chefs or the option of self catering for those preferring the exclusive use of the house for their party. The 4 rooms provide comfortable accommodation for 8 guests with a wide range of activities available on the estate which range from horse back trails to tea tasting and even clay pigeon shooting!
Facilities and Activities
Chawani is beautifully sited on Thyolo Mountain and is surrounded by the protected everygreen forests which are host to a variety of endemic and special species of birds making the property an ideal choice for birding enthusiasts. Satemwa is a working tea estate and guests are encouraged to visit the factory for tea tasting and tour of the factory which produces some of Malawi's finest, export quality tea. While rates at Chawani do not include activities for guests - Satemwa Ulendo Lodges have a variety of activities available on the estate including Horse Riding, Quad biking, mountain bike trails, clay pigeon shooting, fishing and a selection of escorted tours to visit local comunity projects and villages in the area. Owner profile
Founded in 1923 by Maclean Kay, an immigrant from Ayreshire, Scotland, Satemwa Estate has been owned and managed by the Cathcart Kay family for generations with the third generation now integral to the management of daily operations. Chawani Bungalow and Huntingdon House have been recently refurbished in a partnership between Ulendo Safaris and the estate with a view to sharing this important piece of Malawi’s history with guests to the area.
