Ntchisi Forest Lodge sits at 1,500 metres above sea level on the escarpment of the East African Rift Valley in some of Malawi’s last remaining indigenous rainforest in an isolated spot near Lilongwe, Malawi’s capital. The lodge is surrounded by bush and forest on all sides – here you’re really in Africa!
Guests can relax whilst enjoying stunning mountain and Lake views, experience the warm-hearted hospitality of a part of rural Malawi where tourists are still a rarity, and enjoy walking or mountain biking in the beautiful scenery.
Rare birds and beautiful orchids are abundant and there’s always a strong possibility that you’ll see samango monkeys, baboons, antelope and hyenas near the lodge.
The lodge itself is an historical colonial building dating from 1914 (making it one of Malawi’s oldest buildings) so it is ideal for cosy evenings relaxing by a roaring log fire and soaking up the old-world charm.
Facilities and Activities
Ntchisi Forest Reserve and the surrounding hills offer some of the best hiking and mountain biking in the country. An extensive network of marked trails means that guests can tackle the diverse habitats of the different types of indigenous forest either on their own or accompanied by a guide, who can help to reveal some of the wonders of the rainforest and introduce guests to animal tracking.
Guests are likely to see samango monkeys, baboons and rare birds, and small antelope, bush pigs, hyenas, cerval cat, porcupine and many other animals may also be spotted.
Both short strolls around the lodge or longer hikes of up to a day are available to cater for any interests and levels of physique. Lone is always happy to arrange a picnic for guests, and to point out good viewpoints on top of the mountain where you can take a break (or spend the day) and listen to the sounds of the forest.

Ntchisi Forest Lodge is family-run & owned by Danish/ English couple Lone & Craig. Lone & Craig came to Malawi to fulfil a dream of a different lifestyle from their London office jobs, and hope to share it with you at Ntchisi Forest Lodge.
Lone will cook you delicious food during your stay while Craig is expert at advising on hiking trails, or pouring you drinks, depending on your preferences.
