Thawale Camp

Majete Game Reserve, Malawi, Malawi
Only seventy kilometres southwest of Blantyre the Lower Shire Valley holds one of Malawi’s best kept secrets, nearly 70,000 ha of thriving wilderness. African Parks took over management of MAJETE WILDLIFE RESERVE in 2003, over 2000 animals have been reintroduced so far including elephant, black rhino, buffalo, zebra, sable antelope, eland, waterbuck, nyala, hartebeest, kudu and many more species. As a visitor of Majete you can explore this beautiful park in your own vehicle, or you can participate in some of the activities we offer and go on a guided Game Drive in our open game vehicle, go for a Guided Bushwalk or if you’re really looking for something adventurous go Elephant Tracking on foot.
And off course spend the night with us, you can either pitch your tent in our Community Campsite or sleep in more luxurious accommodation at Thawale Camp in one of our twin ensuite Tented Chalets and enjoy dinner while overlooking the floodlit waterhole.

Facilities and Activities

BUSH WALK
Bush walks are guided by our scouts, who themselves cover the full Reserve every day on patrols and are therefore best equipped to tell our visitors all about Majete.

GAME DRIVE
In our open game vehicle, guided by a scout, you go on a drive through the beautiful wilderness of Majete. From the high vehicle and with the sharp eyes of a scout, you have a good chance to spot the different animals that inhabit Majete.

ELEPHANT TRACKING
Elephant tracking is a once in a lifetime experience! Together with two scouts you will go and search for elephants using a radio transmitter. Once there is a signal you will go on foot into the bush. It is important to be downwind and very quiet, you don’t want the elephants to know you are there. They really are wild animals and can be dangerous, but it is truly impressive to be standing just a few metres away from these majestic animals.
